Þórsmörk means “Thor’s Land” or “God’s Land” in Icelandic. The name may be less surprising when you see how incredible this area is:

I don’t think that picture does it justice really. You have to see it to experience it. But, you shouldn’t drive yourself. The road to get there is F249, which has several river crossings. One of those river crossings has a name, which is never a good sign. Krossá is dangerous enough that you shouldn’t consider doing it. Perhaps the article called “Close Call When Vehicle Floats Down Krossá” will prove the point?

But, you can and should visit Þórsmörk with a guide. Here are 2 options we recommend:
1. Midgard Adventures
Midgard is a family run tour company based in Hvolsvöllur in South Iceland. We went on their most popular option: A superjeep tour to Þórsmörk in this impressive 14 passenger superjeep:

2. Hyperborea Tours
Evangelos is the owner of Hyperborea Tours, and he is a volunteer for the Icelandic Search and Rescue team. A client of mine went on a tour with him, and said he was the best tour guide she’s ever had. On any tour anywhere in the world.
He offers tours of Þórsmörk for up to 6 people in his Superjeep. Check out some of the images on the website for his Þórsmörk tours, and you’ll know that this is a place you should try to visit!

Again, the pictures don’t do it justice. Hyperborea’s tours are one price for a private tour, and so you’ll pay more unless you have a group of 5 or 6 people. But it’s a private tour, and the cancellation policy is more flexible than with Midgard.
No matter which option you choose, you’ll hopefully have an amazing time in Thor’s Land!
